The Packer game is on, which is prime knitting time, but I have to pause for a moment to let my fingers rest and share my latest obsession and a pattern I’ve developed out of need and curiosity.

Need? I made scrubby washcloths for a few, but not all of the family members and friends who were interested in having some at Christmas. However, Christmas has passed, so the red-white-and-green motif I’d used for the originals would no longer be appreciated. What holiday’s next? Well, Chinese New Year and MLK Day, but silhouettes of Martin Luther King, Jr and/or monkeys (as in year-of) would be too hard not only to create, but also to identify once completed.

So, Valentine’s Day is next, and I love hearts. In December I had designed a little heart pocket to attach to a coffee cozy, so I took that same design enlarged and converted to garter instead of stockinette, and this is what happened:  Aren’t they cute? For scrubbies, I mean. They are sort of, well, furry, but I think they’ll work.

So here’s what I did:

VALENTINE HEART SCRUBBY

You will need:
Red Heart Scrubby yarn
Any dish cotton. I used Sugar & Cream
Size 10 straight metal needles (Note: this is a pretty tough knit, capable of snapping wooden or plastic needles!)

Instructions:

Body:
Holding both scrubby and cotton yarn together…
slip stitch onto needle and c/o 2 stitches.

Row 1: K1
Row 2: kfb, K1
Row 3: kfb K to end
repeat row 3 until you have 22 stitches

K 3 rows straight across

(Bind off 1 stitch, K to end) for 4 rows (18 st left)

First Lobe:

K9, turn (leave remaining nine stitches on needle, but work on first 9 for now).

Working on these stitches only:
Bind off 1 st, K to end
Repeat last row until you have 6 st
Bind Off 2 stitches, K to end
Repeat last row until you have 2 st left.

K2tog. Finish off.

Second Lobe:

Rejoin yarn to remaining stitches at center of heart,
K1 row
Bind off 1 st, K to end
Repeat last row until you have 6 st
Bind Off 2 stitches, K to end
Repeat last row until you have 2 st left.

K2tog. Finish off.

Then comes my least favorite, but most necessary part: sewing in ends.

Et voilà, a scrubby. Mignon, non?

Try it out and let me know what you think!

Thank you for this pattern it’s great I made one and plan on making more. Just one quick question when you start it you have one stitch and then k1 the next row you have kfb k1 how do you do that with only one stitch on needle?
    Thank you

Oops! I guess I was including the initial slip knot as one of the 2 stitches to knit into in that second row, and didn’t count it as a cast on stitch. Sorry for the confusion!! Hope it turned out for you.

  • I love this little pattern and hope to be making some for Valentine’s Day. I have one question. After I cast on one stitch and I do row one, which is just knitting that stitch, how can I do row two (kfb,K1) with only one stitch on my needle? Is it just me, or is this an error in the pattern? Thank you so much for your lovely pattern and I hope I can get this straightened out.

I’m so sorry. It should have read “cast on 2.” I will fix it right now. Thanks for asking!!
